As a child, she attended school in New York, Florida, Georgia and Ohio.
She got her first stage job at 16, dancing and then singing at The Cotton Club in Harlem, where she worked with musicians such as Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington.
She was 21 when she made her first movie.
Her pictures at MGM were shot so that her scenes could be cut out when they were shown in the South - the studio didn't want to take a chance on losing that source of revenue.
In 1956, she left films to concentrate on music and the stage.
She was inducted into the Big Band and Jazz Hall of Fame in 1991.

director: preston sturges
Preston Sturges ranks as one of the American cinema's most gifted and talented screenwriters and directors. His writings featured astringent dialogue that was both cosmopolitan and jargonistic. Sturges also excelled in staging scenes with razor-sharp wit but was willing to include broad slapstick. As Terrence Rafferty put it, "he was one of the true wild men of movie comedy, a legitimate successor to the improvisatory gagmen of the silent era. ..." (more info)

I love movies. LOTS of people love movies. I'll admit that "seen any good movies lately?" is a "go to" question I often use in social situations. (It's worth a good 10 minutes of sharing by my hairstylist.) So, as the first in an ongoing series, meet Laney from Cache of Panache and learn about some of the movies she likes!
1. In the last year, what's the best movie you've seen?
Inception
2. What do you think is one of the most underrated movies?
Finding Neverland
Gettysburg
3. Which movie(s) do you think has the best soundtrack or score?
Original Score – Gettysburg and Dances With Wolves
Popular Music – Remember the Titans and Back to the Future
4. Have you ever watched a movie that changed your opinion about something? If so, what was it?
I didn’t think I’d like a foreign film, especially not dubbed. I watched “Life Is Beautiful” in Italian with English subtitles after I watched the dubbed. It was so much more enjoyable in Italian. Plus, it probably helps that Italian is a cousin to Spanish so I could understand some of it. I loved that movie!
5. Which movie is one of your guilty pleasures?
Just about anything with Arnold Schwarzenegger.
6. What's a movie that no one would expect you to love?
Predator – I watched it in Elementary School with my Dad and will watch it whenever it’s on TV.
7. Name a movie that you didn't like at first, but that eventually grew on you.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
8. What is your favorite movie(s) based on a book?
Jane Austen minus Mansfield Park, Harry Potter minus Order of the Phoenix, The Secret of Nimh, Lord of the Rings –because I’m NEVER reading those books, Jurassic Park
9. Is there an older movie that you think would be great as a remake?
Lost Horizon – NOT as a musical
10. What is the most hilarious movie(s) you've ever seen?
The first time I watched Tommy Boy, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Trading Places. I laughed my head off. They all still crack me up.
11. Name a movie that you hate but everyone else loves.
Napoleon Dynamite & Citizen Kane.
12. Which movie(s) do you wish you had seen in the theater?
Inception & The Ten Commandments

Her contract with 20th Century Fox specified that there would be no cutting away from her to reaction shots and/or dialog from other players while her musical numbers were in progress.
She was 5' tall.
She was in two films with Cesar Romero.
In the 1940s she was the highest paid star/performer in the United States.
Although a huge star in Brazil, she was actually from Portugal. Although she became a naturalized Brazilian citizen, she also kept her Portuguese citizenship, never gave up her Portuguese passport and privately considered herself Portuguese rather than Brazilian.

He was so fanatical about wine that he often sent bottles back if they were not to his liking, sometimes even to his own wine cellar.
He was almost completely blind in the left eye as the result of a childhood bout of measles.
He once punched Frank Sinatra in the jaw, thinking the singer was hitting on his wife, Lilli Palmer. Afterwards the two men became good friends.
He said, after viewing The Sound of Music, “That was the only time I've ever rooted for the Nazis.”
His son recalled sitting watching a storm with his father. When a bolt of lightning obliterated a tree in their yard, his father exclaimed, “Well hit, God!”

guess who.
When he was born he was mistakenly listed as a female on his birth certificate.
He disliked Greta Garbo, a feeling that was mutual. She thought his acting was wooden while he considered her a snob.
He watched very little television except boxing matches.
He had a fear of flying, and made all long journeys across America by train.
Adolf Hitler esteemed the film star above all other actors, and during the war offered a sizable reward to anyone who could capture and return this star (who had enlisted in the Army Air Corps and was flying combat missions over Germany) unscathed to him.
He enlisted in the army in honor of his late wife, Carole Lombard. She had been killed in a plane crash while on tour selling war bonds.
He gave his 1934 Oscar to a child who admired it, telling him it was the winning of the statue that had mattered, not owning it. The child returned the Oscar to the star’s family after his death.
He disliked his most famous film, which he regarded as "a woman's picture".

butch cassidy and the sundance kid

the year: 1969
the genre: western

the cast: Paul Newman (Butch Cassidy); Robert Redford (Sundance Kid); Katherine Ross (Etta Place)

the plot: Butch and Sundance are the two leaders of the Hole-in-the-Wall Gang. Butch is all ideas, and Sundance is all action and skill. The west is becoming civilized and when Butch and Sundance rob a train once too often, a special posse begins trailing them no matter where they run. Over rock, through towns, across rivers, the group is always just behind them. When they finally escape through sheer luck, Butch has another idea, "Let's go to Bolivia".

don't miss: the friendly banter between Butch and Sundance.

listen for: "Is that what you call giving cover?" "Is that what you call running? If I knew you were going to stroll..."

did you know: this movie was filmed on the sound stage next to Hello, Dolly! Director George Roy Hill believed that the studio would allow him to film the New York scenes on "Dolly's" sets, since the two films' daily shooting schedules were totally different. After production started, though, the studio informed him that it wanted to keep the sets for "Dolly" a secret and refused him permission. To work around this, Hill had Robert Redford, Paul Newman and Katharine Ross simply pose on the sets as photos were taken of them. He then inserted images of the three stars into a series of 300 actual period photos and spliced the two different sets (real and posed) together to form the New York montage.

extra bonus points: if you know why Sundance doesn't want to jump off the cliff.
disclaimer for Erika: the ending is bittersweet.
