remakes

The subject of remakes has come up a couple of different times in the last two weeks, so here goes. Which version do you like better - old or new? Are there other remakes you're fond of that I've missed?

Miracle on 34th Street:

The Parent Trap:

State Fair:

The Italian Job:

Yours, Mine and Ours:

High Society/The Philadelphia Story:

Shop Around the Corner/You've Got Mail:

Sabrina:

Cheaper By the Dozen:

The Music Man:

The Reluctant Debutante/What a Girl Wants:

I haven't seen all of these, so I can't necessarily compare, but I do love the older State Fair, new Italian Job, You've Got Mail, BOTH Reluctant Debutant and What a Girl Wants. I most emphatically prefer the old Music Man--I couldn't even make it through the new one.

We should throw Charade up there. It was remade in "The Truth About Charlie" but the only way they could get the latter to sell was to add the full length Charade as a special feature. We've owned it for years and have enjoyed the "special feature" countless times but have never watched The Truth About Charlie. Scott saw it once before we were married and has had no desire to see it again (which is saying something for all of you who know Scott--A Walk to Remember anyone?)

Good one, Aubree! I agree! The only thing I like about The Truth About Charlie is Mark Wahlberg. (sigh) And even he's not enough to save the film. Too artsy for me.

I've discovered I'm a remake snob. I know you're shocked! Depends on which one I saw first and that's usually my preferred. The only exceptions are Miracle on 34th - liked both, Parent Trap - both, High Society - both, Cheaper By the Dozen - both. I was surprised that I didn't like the original Sabrina much.

I'll take Erika's comment to heart and never bother with the MM remake. Certain movies just shouldn't be messed with!

I like the remade Miracle on 34th St. Santa just looks better in color! I shall refrain from comments on the Parent Trap. I prefer going to a real State Fair. It's just not the same if you can't smell the agricultural exhibits. Mark Walberg in 2 remakes huh? Must not have any original ideas. He needs a 3rd one, because we all know 3 is a lucky number for him! ;) Original Yours, Mine and Ours. I'm not much for High Society. I prefer the common folk. Only seen You've Got Mail. Only seen parts of Sabrina. I was banished from the room. Only seen parts of Cheaper by the dozen, so I can't say. And why would anyone attempt to remake the Music Man. Unless they made a brother's version with a black Professor Hill. That could be fun. No comment on the last one.

I think what kills the original Sabrina for me is the David character. I've never been a big fan of William Holden, truth be told, and I thought Greg Kinear was more likeable.

I'm trying to think what the title would be for a brother's version of the Music Man. "R&B Brotha'?" My wit is failing me.

No comment of What a Girl Wants because I refused to even enter the room--Scott
