brigadoon

the year: 1954

the genre: musical

the cast: Gene Kelly (Tommy Albright); Van Johnson (Jeff Douglas); Cyd Charisse (Fiona Campbell); Barry Jones (Mr. Lundie)

the plot: Americans Jeff and Tommy, hunting in Scotland, stumble upon a village - Brigadoon. They soon learn that the town appears once every 100 years in order to preserve its peace and special beauty. The citizens go to bed at night and when they wake up, it's 100 years later. Tommy falls in love with a beautiful young woman, Fiona, and is torn between staying or, as Jeff is encouraging him, going back to his hectic life in New York.

don't miss: the heather on the hill.

listen for: "It's the hardest thing in the world to give everything. Though it's usually the only way to get everything."

did you know: Cyd Charisse said that, of the several films she made with Gene Kelly, this was her favorite.

extra bonus points: if you know the two big names originally slated to play the leads - it would have made for a very different movie, I think!

Alright, I'll take a stab. Danny Kaye and Dorris Day. I know it's not right, but don't you think those two ought to have made a movie together? Their names fit so well, and anything with both of them would have been irremediably cheesey.

Scott, I wholeheartedly agree - a movie with Danny Kaye and Doris Day would have been awesome!! Danny Kaye, Doris Day...Danny Kaye, Doris Day...

Answer: Howard Keel and Jane Powell were originally slated to play the leads. They were unable to do so due to other movies they were working on.

That would've been 7Bf7B's all over again. I'm glad they weren't the final actors...it would've been weird. Cyd is a much better Irishwoman.
