nacho libre

the year: 2006

the genre: comedy

the cast: Jack Black (Nacho); Ana de la Reguera (Sister Encarnacion); Hector Jimenez (Esqueleto); Darius Rose (Chancho)

the plot: Nacho is a monastery cook, who spends his day feeding orphans and being underutilized (with "dead guy duty"). When Sister EncarnaciĆ³n arrives at the monastery, Nacho realizes that the only way to win her affection and to save the children, will be by competing as a Luchador wrestler.

don't miss: the summoning of the eagle powers - the film version is almost as good as a Sunbeam doing it before praying.

listen for: "How did you find me in the wilderness?" "I saw you from the village."

extra bonus points: if you know how many (and what kinds of) hugs and kisses Nacho sends in his letter.

also listen for:"I dunno why you always have to be judging me because I only believe in science."

remember the titans

the year: 2000

the genre: sports

the cast: Denzel Washington (Coach Herman Boone); Will Patton (Coach Bill Yost); Wood Harris (Julius Campbell); Ryan Hurst (Gerry Bertier); Hayden Panettiere (Sheryl Yost)

the plot: In the early 1970s, two schools in Alexandria Virginia integrate forming T.C. Williams High School. The head coach of the Titans is replaced by Herman Boone. Tensions arise when players of different races are forced together on the same football team. Many of these tensions are eased during the two-week training camp in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, but when players return to Alexandria the players find the city in turmoil due to the forced desegregation of the high school.

don't miss: Sunshine's "tryout" for the team.

listen for: "We will be perfect in every aspect of the game. You drop a pass, you run a mile. You miss a blocking assignment, you run a mile. You fumble the football, and I will break my foot off in your John Brown hind parts. And then you will run a mile. Perfection. Let's go to work."

did you know: it was actually an old toilet that was thrown through the Boone's window, not a brick - but film makers thought this would add humor to a serious situation so they changed it.

extra bonus points: if you know who, in Greek mythology, actually DID defeat the Titans.

also listen for: "Now THAT'S a Momma joke."

did you also know: the state championship game was played at 12 o'clock noon on Saturday, not at night as portrayed in the movie.

leatherheads

the year: 2008

the genre: comedy

the cast: John Karsinski (Carther Rutherford); George Clooney (Jimmy "Dodge" Connelly); Renee Zellweger (Lexie Littleton)

the plot: Dodge Connolly, a charming, brash football hero, is determined to guide his team from bar brawls to packed stadiums. But after the players lose their sponsor and the entire league faces certain collapse, Dodge convinces a college football star to join his ragtag ranks. The captain hopes his latest move will help the struggling sport finally capture the country's attention. Welcome to the team Carter Rutherford, America's favorite son. A golden-boy war hero who single-handedly forced multiple German soldiers to surrender in WWI, Carter has dashing good looks and unparalleled speed on the field. This new champ is almost too good to be true, and cub journalist Lexie Littleton aims to prove that's the case.

don't miss: the meet cute between Lexie and Dodge.

listen for: "Yeah, I kissed her! On the mouth, twice! And I liked it. A lot!"

did you know: Clooney claimed that he had rewritten all but two scenes and had asked the WGA for credit. When they denied his request, he removed himself as a voting member and changed his status to "Financial Core Member."

extra bonus points: if you know what's interesting about the announcer in the last game talking about the "Hail Mary" pass.

invincible

the year: 2006

the genre: sports

the cast: Mark Wahlberg (Vince Papale); Elizabeth Banks (Janet Cantrell); Greg Kinnear (Dick Vermeil)

the plot: A 30-year old Philadelphia Eagles fan who has just lost his teaching job and his wife (after she walks out) decides, at the urging of his friends, to show up for open tryouts - held at the suggestion of new coach Dick Vermeil.

don't miss: In the Giants game, when Mark Wahlberg is running down the sideline in special teams coverage, a Giants player hits him hard and knocks him down. This Giants player was a football player at the nearby University of Delaware, and was not supposed to contact Wahlberg, let alone knock him down. (Take THAT Blue Hen gainsayers!)

watch for: a smart aleck comment by Blaine. He usually has one when I mention Mark Wahlberg. :)

listen for: "Who said I was talking about him?"

did you know: the boy running in the street with the makeshift number 83 jersey is the real Vince Papale's son.

miracle

the year: 2004

the genre: sports

the cast: Kurt Russell (Herb Brooks); Patricia Clarkson (Patti Brooks); Sean McCann (Walter Bush); Eddie Cahill (Jim Craig); Patrick O’Brien Demsey (Mike Eruzione); Michael Mantenuto (Jack O’Callahan)

the plot: Coach Herb Brooks, takes a group of ragtag college hockey players and creates a powerhouse that takes on the legendary Soviet Union team at the 1980 Olympic Games.

count: how many “Herbies” the guys have to skate after the Noway game.

don’t miss: Real-life Patti Brooks as an extra in the stands during the U.S. vs. Russia game. You can see her positioned up and to the left of the actor who portrayed Jim Craig's dad in the movie, during many of his scenes during the U.S.-vs.-Russia game. She also appears in a couple of scenes with Walter Bush, the director of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Committee.

check out: why Cox plays college hockey. (Hint: “isn’t it obvious?”)

listen for: "What's up, you sieve!" At the national team hockey tryouts, Jack O'Callahan greets Jim Craig, with that quote. In ice hockey slang, a sieve is a goal tender who allows too many shots to go through into his net.

also listen for: “When you pull on that jersey, you represent yourself and your teammates. And the name on the front is a hell of alot more important than the one on the back! Get that through your head!”

did you know: The young men chosen to portray the members of Team USA were chosen primarily for their hockey skills due to the intensive nature of the filming; acting ability was secondary. In fact, for most of them, this was their first major film.

also listen for: “I'm not looking for the best players, Craig. I'm looking for the right ones.”

extra bonus points: If you know who portrayed Team USA player Buzz Schneider in the film.
