galaxy quest
the year: 1999
the genre: comedy
the cast: Tim Allen (Jason Nesmith); Sigourney Weaver (Gwen DeMarco); Alan Rickman (Alexander Dane); Tony Shalhoub (Fred Kwan); Sam Rockwell (Guy Fleegman); Enrico Colantoni (Mathesar)
the plot: Eighteen years after their sci-fi adventure show "Galaxy Quest" was canceled, actors Jason Nesmith, Gwen DeMarco, Alexander Dane, Tommy Webber, and Fred Kwan are making appearances at sci-fi conventions and store openings in costume and character. They're wallowing in despair and at each other's throats until aliens known as Thermians arrive and, having mistaken the show for fact and consequently modeling their entire culture around it, take them into space to save them from General Sarris and his armada.
count: how many times Alexander Dane says, "By Grapthar's hammer."
listen for: "HEY! Don't open that! It's an alien planet! Is there air out there? You don't know!"
did you know: the scene when Tim Allen is in the men's room and overhears how the cast of Galaxy Quest are nobodies and all his co-stars can't stand him mirrors an actual event in William Shatner's life. He overheard the exact same things about himself when he attended a Star Trek convention.
extra bonus points: if you know what sound the NSEA Protector's automatic doors were given - instead of ripping off the standard Star Trek "Swooosh-thweep" sound.

Why have I never been able to convey the comic value of this movie to Aubree?
"Let's get out of here before one of those things kills Guy!"
Well, it can't be a lack of watching Star Trek, because I've watched a sum total of 2 hours of anything related to ST. Maybe it's an aversion to Tim Allen - THAT I can understand. :)
I see you managed to get your shirt off! I love this movie. Aubree just needs to watch it with the right group ;)
Answer: The automatic doors were given the same "Tweeep-Clunk" sound effect as the doors in the original version of the video game Ultimate Doom.
