yours, mine and ours
the year: 1968
the genre: comedy
the cast: Lucille Ball (Helen North Beardsley); Henry Fonda (Frank Beardsley); Van Johnson (Darrel Harrison); Tim Matheson (Mike Beardsley); Tom Bosley (Family Doctor)
the plot: When a widower with 10 children marries a widow with 8, can the 20 of them come together as one big happy family? Join the Beardsley's as they find a house big enough for all of them, learn to make 18 school lunches, cope with a son going off to war, take on the nuns at the local school, have an unexpected addition to the family, and try to turn "yours" and "mine" into "ours".
count: how many of the Beardsley boys are culprits in the "alcoholic Pearl Harbor".
don't miss: Frank being able to find Helen's number in the phone directory - even though she only recently moved to the area.
look for: the reflection of a cameraman visible in the window of the school bus as it drives off.
listen for: "Your Irish coffee is *winking* at me."
did you know: the commercial success of Yours, Mine and Ours led ABC and Paramount Studios to green-light The Brady Bunch. (MUCH to Blaine's delight.)
extra bonus points: if you know who Henry Fonda replaced in the role of Frank Beardsley.
also listen for: "Your blues and greens are wonderful, but your he's and she's got a little mixed up."
did you also know: the wedding invitation used in the movie is the actual wedding invitation designed by the real Frank Beardsley. The children's names are listed in their real-life birth order.
I didn't know it was based on a real life family! I love this movie. It made me love Henry Fonda -- Fort Apache gave me a less than positive impression of him originally. Tim Matheson is SO young!
ReplyDeleteI think in real life they ended up having two kids together making an even 20.
ReplyDeleteFor the bonus question I'm going to guess Cary Grant--he always seems to be the answer to "who was this role originally meant for" type questions.
Good guess. It was actually Fred MacMurray.
ReplyDeleteNothing should ever be a green light for the Brady Bunch.
ReplyDelete"I think I'll go for a walk outside now - the summer sun's calling my name..."
